what to do with the rest of the day's afternon...isn't it strange how we change everything we did...did i do all i should...what i could've done... - djm, stay or leave

looks life i'm not going to be alissa delaney too much longer. i know i avoid some personal stuff here, but dan and i are going to end it. don't really know what else to say, except it's somewhat of a relief - to not be in limbo. and to think of all of the doors that can open now...

more soon, but boone was amazing. perfect. no say goodbye, but everything else...and i was SO close...WOW. :)

Friday, March 28

no say goodbye. ah well. maybe tonight? (winston salem)...the show was awesome, though. heard everything else, the crowd was decent, and the people around me were quiet. one minor complaint - i was on the asile (of the 2nd tier...but the place was so tiny!) and there was a seemingly endless stream of people going up and down. the women all seemed to be wearing 'clunky' shoes (and lowrider jeans and stretchy tops - it was the college student uniform) and they weren't quiet walkers! 'clump clump..' ah well, at least i didn't have to deal with some obnoxious person talking the whole show!

"above all things
peace is the greatest thing that can happen in this world..." ~ djm 3.19.03

less than 36 hours. maybe i should have a 'say goodbye' marathon on my cd player today...(i have 2 solely say goodbye cds. i'm a dork)...at this point, i may not be as crazy about it as i was a few years back but now that it's been so many shows without one...*sigh*

the second graders that were here a few weeks ago wrote letters to us here at the center. the teacher gave us some of them. they are too cute. so funny to see the it through a second grader's eyes...and spelling. :)

'my favorite class was eqautecs (aquatics) 2 but falling in was the werst part. even werster then the rain' (apparently he ended up falling in the lake)

'thank you kevin for teliing me a littil about dinaosors and let me dig for dinosaur bones to. a barey humungis bone to. and to the staff, remember the gye hoo played the king it was funy....got to go. bye for now.' (we have a fossils class where we bury bones in a 'fossil pit' [giant sandbox]; and we did a skit at the campfire where a coworker played a king.)

and these are nice to read...makes it all feel even more worthwhile...

'betsy jeff (betsy jeff penn 4h educational center - where i work) is the best palce to go on a feald trip. and it was fun raising the flag and being a table waiter was cool. all of the classos are the best. you gies are realy fun.' (awwww...)

'i absalotly absalotly love your camp! my favrite (i never realized how many ways 'favorite' could be spelled!) part was the reptile house. when you got to hold the snake's and turtle's. (oh no, the dreaded misplaced apostrophe. but she's only in second grade - hopefully she learns it by high school. why is that so hard for people? no " 's " unless it's possessive.)

my other faverite part was when you tought us song. i memerise them! i sing them all the time! (oh, his poor poor parents) 1 more faverite part ... everything! "got to go" "bye" (w/ quotes! where did they learn 'got to go bye?' makes me think of an IM exchange...wonder if that's where it came from. imagining a kid typing with all the misspelled/misinterpreted words strikes me as funny - it's one thing when it's scrawled in elementary penmenship in pencil...but to see it on a screen in a font? weird)

picked up my dave and tim ticket at the fed ex place in greensboro. :) i was too worried it wouldn't make it. i think it's because i've had a couple 'worst case scenarios' occur that i'm paranoid - i missed the beginning of my first dmb show because of traffic, and i've had a ticket misdelivered - one that i was sending to a friend. never got there. :(

i woke up with 'disneyland feeling' - so excited i couldn't sleep, and woke up all happy and stuff. :)

Friday, March 21

sorry, but 0 does not seem to be a valid account number. please carefully check it and try entering it again...

my dave and tim tickets are supposed to be delivered today. i'm not going to be here. if the fed ex guy is late, no one will be at the office to get them. i've had tickets misdelivered before, so i worry. plus, now i live out in the country. didn't help to get a call last night from a friend...'you do live at 408 cedar lane?' yup. 'reidsville, north carolina?' yup. 27320. that's it...seems the package he sent to me was sent back to him because there is 'no such address'...what if the fed ex guy thinks the same thing?? going to pick them up in greensboro instead. :) (haha, i worry wayyyy too much sometimes...)

i have so much going on in my head about the war, but i'm trying to avoid the media onslaught. the thought of the media showing the death and destruction we caused with our million dollar bombs to reassure americans that the one with the biggest bombs wins just makes me sad. frustrated. i know, there have been battles for thousands of years. i have a hard time with any violent conflict. but when the weapons availible now have the ability to devastate the entire planet, shouldn't we rethink this a little?

'war is not the answer'

jumping all over the place today. sorry about the lack of posts. nothing really exciting going on except work. (which i love :) ) finally saw 'amalie' this week. wonderful movie. wow! i've now seen two movies in the past 6 months! in amalie, i had to 'read' the movie...hmm, maybe i like it because it *kind* feels like reading a book... :P

** ** ** **
going to see bela fleck in charlottesville tonight. 6th row center. (did i say that already here? i never get seats like that!)..then 3 dave and tim shows next week...can't wait!! once again, i'm on the quest for a say goodbye. if not on this tour, i'll be up to 18 shows without one. i think i'm cursed.

Sunday, March 16

hectic week, running around after second graders for three days. whew. great fun, but exhausting. kids can be so funny. i was teaching the 'pioneer' class, where we pretend it's the late 1700s, dress up, make candles and cornbread, talk about tools/chores, etc. i taught the class on the third day, and some of the students had me as an instructor in other classes. we 'play the part' and pretend we know nothing about modern times...i was standing outside tending the fire (and trying to keep myself warm! a muslin bonnet is nowhere nearly as warm as a wool hat!) when a group of kids walked up. one said -

'you're not real, you're ALISSA!'

hmm, maybe not being real is a good thing? more fun? ;)

while i was making cornbread, i asked the kids what the main ingredients in cornbread were. one boy piped up with 'well, there's corn...and corn...and bread!'

hee hee.

just got a notice for my 10 year high school reunion. damn, 10 years. i've changed so much...i think it'd be entertaining to go to it, but i wasn't close with anyone from high school, and haven't talked to anyone since i left. and, at $75 a person, i think i'll be staying home. it does make me feel old, though. :/

'Better Habits Could Slash Cancer in US'

um, DUH.

take care of yourself, eat right, exercise, stop smoking, and you'll be less likely to get cancer. how many times do they have to tell people this?

along the same line...

McDonald's Courts Health Crowd with New Products

now, do you REALLY think americans are going to listen to the cancer warnings and buy these 'healthy' products?

i don't think so, either. pfft.

salad shakers were a staple of my 'cross country fast food' diet. oh, what i'd do for a healthy fast food place!

Sunday, March 9

oh how i love customer service.

i had two rolls of film to be developed. there was a coupon in today's target paper for a free second set of prints. i took the two rolls to target, filled out the envelopes, requesting a single set and a photo CD for one set, and doubles for the other. no one was at the photo counter, so i asked a red-shirted guy (hoping he was a target employee. he was :) ) if i could get some help.

'oh, he won't be in until 1pm' (it was about 11am)

hmm. he told me i could leave them, and they'd get done when he came in.

'so, they'll be ready about 2pm?' i said.

'2:30pm' he said. for one hour developing? and hour and a half? ok....

bought oil, figuring i could get my oil changed in the meantime. (i use mobil1, so i bring my own oil to jiffy lube). checked out. and...the photo guy was there, taking my film out of the envelope. yay! i walked up.

'so, will these be ready in about an hour?' i asked

'no, more like 1:30pm. actually, more like 2pm'

huh? ok....asked where the nearest jiffy lube was. right down the street. drove there...CLOSED. huh? things in the south tend to close on sundays. which is weird for me. then again, they also dress up for church on sundays, which is just as weird. found another car place.

'we can do it if you can leave your car until 4pm'

no can do. asked if there was ANYWHERE i could get my oil changed on sunday in greensboro.

'nope, we're the only ones open'

ARGH!!!

went to the health food store and got lunch and read my book. at 2pm, went back to the target photo counter. 3 HOURS later. to pick up my 1 hour photos. wonder what kind of clocks they're using.

'oh,' he said, 'it'll be 10 more minutes.

ok.....

read cosmo. scary. i can't believe women read that stuff. no wonder men think we're so strange. got the film. came home.

i have one set of prints with a cd, and...one set of prints. no doubles. i think i have bad target photo karma...i call. he told me to just bring in the negatives. i'm now 30 mins away. supposedly, i can bring them in next week for the second set, and they will give me free developing for another roll. we'll see if that happens.

too. damn. funny.

Friday, March 7

this venue names are really making me wonder. home depot center? what? the boys are playing home depot? does this mean chainsaws, hammers and staple guns? 'whrrrr whrrrrr pound pow pow..whrrrr pound pound whrrr...pow pow whrrrr...'

hmm. sounds like the opening notes to warehouse...

or sacramento's sleep train amp. (formerly known as the sac valley amp, then the auto west amp)...the sleep train sound must be classic. 'zz..mhmf...zz.zz.zzzzz..yawn...choo choo...zzzz....chugga chuggaa...zzzz...mhmf...yawn yawn...'

ah! two step! one of my favorites. ;)

these new names make 'verizon wireless' sound almost good.

almost.

too excited to say more right now... :)

check out this picture of the phish show - it was amazing! first proud mary since 1983, at their first gig. hmm, i was 8 in 1983. :)

Monday, March 3

finally. back. yay!

this is now late, but i read an article the other day about the passing of mr. rogers. (fred rogers? he's kinda like a teacher in elementary school 'what? thy have FIRST names, too?') something he said, according to the article: 'have you ever heard loud and scary noises on television? people shooting and hitting each other? well, there's something you can do about that. you can turn it off. but you have to be very strong to turn off scary television. and when you do that, you are the strongest one of all'

those of you who know me personally know my general dislike for tv. when we were out of power last week, one of my coworkers fretted about the lack of tv/dvd/playstation. what can we do without it?

geez, lots. it was nice a nice excuse to have nothing to do but sit in front of the fire and read. to stare out the window and think. to draw, to paint. to *gasp* talk to each other. it is sad that having the tv on is a given, and having it OFF is the exception. how did that happen? when did it shift from being evening entertainment to a constant hum that follows us whenever we are home? lunches here in the staff house are often with the background noise of 'a price is right' (i can't believe that it's still on. how old IS bob barker already? i wonder just how many times he's said that 'spay and neuter your pets' line...) i know some of us would much prefer music, or converstation, but tv always seems to get first dibs, and 'can we play music instead?' as an odd request.

i hate violence. television, video games, movies. i haven't developed a numbness for it, and don't want to. it's so sad to me that it's seen as a 'normal' occurance in our lives. that it;s just accepted. that turning the tv OFF is seen as a difficult choice, vs. turning it ON being the first thing you do rather than only when there;'s something you WANT to watch. (which you don't need to turn it on to find out. they make tv guides for a reason...)

mr. rogers started working in telelvision because he 'hated it so'...it's sad that he's gone, even sadder that though he's admired and respected, few shows seeked to emulate his. :(

'there's only one person in the whole world like you!' :)

Sunday, March 2

my power has been o¨ut since 3pm thursday, and now i'm øn my coworker's parents' mac. just have a second to say thåt yes, i still will be updating this thing...a hard drive crashed at the place where i host it and it was down for awhile (grrr.)...then j¨st as i typed 'finally' to start a new entry thursday, ou® power went out because of the ice storm. (heard branch´es snapping, trees falling all night wednesday. thank goodness none fell on m¥ ??hø¨use or car. a pine tree fell on çarl's (coworker) camper shell and cr¨üshed it.) and it still wasn't back on as of 3pm yesterday. went to the phîsh show last night. it was awesome.

more soon, i hope...sorry for the lack of posts. i have SOOOOO much to say.

drive went well, after a flat and a blizzard. (what a wa¥ to start, eh?) chased that giant storm across the cøuntry. fortunately, didn't get stuck in any tornados. ice storm are cool, but losing power is a huge bummer...damnit, i had to eat all the melting ice cream. ;)
